Politics and sport are always uneasy bedfellows, and things got even more awkward ahead of the Boston Red Sox's visit to the White House as the government's official website welcomed them - by spelling their famous name wrong.

The Red Sox were set to visit the White House - and United States President Donald Trump - to celebrate the team's 2018 World Series triumph.

And an already-controversial visit has resulted in another embarrassing moment for White House staffers who run the government HQ's official website.

The website streams all official visits live, and listed the MLB champions' visit by calling them the "The Boston Red Socks".

"President Trump Welcomes the 2018 World Series Champions The Boston Red Socks to the White House," said the link on the White House website.

The typo was eventually changed to accurately reflect the correct spelling of the team, with no comment made by the White House.

The website gaffe adds to the controversy surrounding the team's visit, with team manager Alex Cora and a number of players of color - including American League MVP Mookie Betts - opting to decline the invitation.

Puerto Rican Cora's decision to skip the event was as a result of his disappointment at the government's efforts to help his native country following the hurricane that struck the nation in 2017.
