A senior coroner investigating the death of Prodigy frontman Keith Flint has stated there is insufficient evidence to conclude that he took his own life.

An inquest into the 49-year-old music star’s death found that he had died as a result of hanging. He was found dead in his Essex home on March 4.

“We will never quite know what was going on in his mind on that date,” Essex senior coroner Caroline Beasley-Murray said, recording an ‘open conclusion’ to the inquest.

The coroner’s remarks contradict statements made by Flint’s bandmates following the musician’s tragic and untimely death, in which they claimed he died by suicide. Flint was found with unspecified amounts of narcotics including cocaine, codeine and alcohol in his system at the time of his death, according to the latest inquest findings.

Beasley-Murray confirmed there was no evidence to indicate the involvement of a third party in Flint’s death but neither could she unequivocally state that he took his own life: “Having regard to all the circumstances, I don’t find that there’s enough evidence for that.”

She also found insufficient evidence to conclude that Flint’s death was an accident. “I’m going to conclude an open conclusion,” she said. “We will never quite know what was going on in his mind on that date and so that’s why I’m going to record an open conclusion.”

Bandmates Liam Howlett and Maxim described Flint as a “true pioneer, innovator and legend” who will be “forever missed.”
