The center-left Finnish Social Democratic Party (SPD) has declared victory in the country’s parliamentary elections, with preliminary results show them clinching 40 seats (17.7 percent) in the 200-member legislature after 99 percent of the ballots have been counted. The nationalist Finns Party is in close pursuit with 17.5 percent, which makes them the second biggest party in the parliament with 39 seats. The conservative National Coalition Party trails in third with 17 percent of the vote and 38 seats. While the projections are within a margin of an error, SDP leader Antti Rinne has already claimed his party’s victory in the tightly-contested race on Sunday. "For the first time since 1999 we are the largest party in Finland ... SDP is the prime minister party," he said.
