President Omar al-Bashir, who ruled Sudan for over 30 consecutive years, has been ousted from power after deadly clashes between protesters and security forces reached a climax this week, multiple reports say.
Earlier in the day, Sudanese armed forces said that they would “present an important statement shortly.” It came after reports of armored vehicles surrounding al-Bashir’s presidential palace in the capital city of Khartoum.
As thousands of protesters gathered for a sit-in outside the army headquarters in Khartoum, television and radio stations broadcast footage of military marches and patriotic music. It followed massive clashes between anti-government activists and uniformed security forces last week.
