It has been more than a week since “Divergent” actress Shailene Woodley was arrested after protesting the Dakota Access pipeline in North Dakota. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Woodley pleaded not guilty in a North Dakota criminal court. The “Fault in Our Stars’ leading lady was booked on criminal trespass and riot charges. The Hollywood Reporter also states the actress could face up to 60 days in jail and $3,000 in fines. Her attorney, Alexander Reichert, entered her plea on Tuesday. Woodley was arrested on October 10 along with 26 other people that day.
Shailene Woodley supports the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe
Hundreds of protestors have shown their support for the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe for months. The tribe and protestors want the construction of a $3.8 billion pipeline stopped. They say their water supply can be affected and intrude on tribal burial sites. The fight to stop the pipeline has united hundreds of indigenous people. According to NBC News, this is the largest demonstration of “indigenous nations in modern American history.” The 1,172-mile oil pipeline would run through the Standing Rock Sioux reservation and parts of the Missouri River. Supporters of the project say it would make it easier for crude oil to travel from North Dakota to other refineries and cut the dangers of rail and truck transportation.

The actress was utilizing the Facebook Live feature when authorities questioned her. Thousands of people witnessed the actress get handcuffed live as it happened. More than two hours of footage was shared on the social media website. Woodley‘s mom was there during the arrest. The video shows the actress questioning authorities as to why she was getting arrested. The video is still on her Facebook page. The video has 72,000 comments, 88,000 shares and 4.7 million views.
The actress breaks her silence after she’s released from jail
Woodley was released from Morton County Jail last Tuesday. She broke her silence since her arrest via an Instagram post. The post shows people on a canoe and read, “One day, baby, we’ll sing our poetry. The words dripping from our tongues wet with ripened patience,” she captioned on Instagram.
