Atlético Madrid slipped to a 2-1 defeat against already relegated Levante at the Ciutat de Valencia stadium to say goodbye to their hopes of claiming a second La Liga title in three seasons. Victories for both Barça and Real Madrid mean the league title is now a two horse race.

Things began brightly for ‘los colchoneros’ when Fernando Torres put them ahead after just two minutes. However, an equaliser from Víctor Casadesús on the half hour mark and an injury time winner in the second half from Guiseppe Rossi mean that Atlético cannot displace Barça at the top of the table no matter what happens in the final round of fixtures.

Real Madrid were made to work hard for their 3-2 victory in the Santiago Bernabéu by a spirited Valencia side. Cristiano Ronaldo and Benzema put the home side 2-0 up at half time with Zidane’s men seemingly cruising to victory.

Rodrigo pulled one back after the break for los che and even though Ronaldo’s second of the game restored Madrid’s two goal advantage, a late effort from André Gomes provoked a nervous final few minutes for the home side.

Thanks to their comprehensive 5-0 win in the Catalan derby, FC Barcelona are now a point ahead of their eternal rivals in the table with just one league game of the season remaining.

Luis Enrique’s know that a victory away at a now safe Granada next weekend will hand them their sixth league title in the last eight year. Real Madrid travel to Deportivo La Coruña knowing they must win and Barça do not if they are to take the league championship.

Down the bottom of the table, after results from this Sunday’s round of match, next week will see two from Getafe, Rayo Vallecano and Sporting Gijón join Levante in the Second Division next season.
