Off to the Pacific Northwest this weekend? You could see the Northern Lights – Sacramento Bee

If you’ve always wanted to see the Northern Lights, they’ll be a little bit closer to California this weekend.

The National Weather Service said that a coronal mass ejection could result in a Aurora Borealis sighting late Sunday night and early Monday morning in the northern part of the United States.

The Northern Lights should be visible in states like Montana, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, northern Illinois, Michigan, northern New York, much of New England, Washington and northeastern Oregon, according to USA Today and KATU.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced a moderate geomagnetic storm watch for July 16 and 17. They announced the watch after analyzing a solar flare on Friday morning, according to KATU.

The flare released a wave of charged particles, known as a coronal mass ejection. When those particles interact with Earth’s magnetic field and atmospheric gases, they form the red and green colors of the aurora, according to USA Today.

The lights are usually visible in the far northern and southern parts of the world, according to USA Today.
