Benjamin Mendy became the most expensive defender in football history as he left the Stade Louis II side, who have sold a huge sum of talent
Monaco’s transfer model appears to be working smoothly, with the Ligue 1 champions already having recouped around €165 million in player sales this summer.
Leonardo Jardim’s side stormed to the Ligue 1 title last season, with many players catching the eye of foreign clubs.
Unsurprisingly, their players have been targeted by many of Europe’s financial heavyweights, but though they have managed to thus far stave off offers for the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Fabinho, three key figures have left.
The latest of these was Benjamin Mendy, whose €57m (£52m) move to Manchester City made him not only Monaco’s most expensive sale of the summer, but the most expensive defender of all time.
Monaco had already sold Bernardo Silva to City for €48m (£43m) while Tiemoue Bakayoko had joined Chelsea for €40m (£35m) earlier in the window.
In addition to these giant sales, Monaco have also offloaded a number of fringe players, most notably fringe striker Valere Germain, who went to Marseille for €8m. Fellow youth product Abdou Diallo signed for Mainz for €5m, meanwhile.
Meanwhile, Nabil Dirar, went to Fenerbahce for €3.5m and Corentin Jean joined Toulouse for a similar fee.
Having spent only €51m on the likes of Youri Tielemans and Terence Kongolo among others, Monaco are running a transfer surplus of over €100m this summer.
