The £89 million midfielder is being tipped to produce his best and silence his doubters in 2017-18 on the back of a much-needed summer break
A “fresh” Paul Pogba is being tipped to show his true colours at Manchester United in 2017-18 by Phil Neville.
The France international returned to Old Trafford in the summer of 2016 in a record-breaking £89 million transfer.
With that fee bringing with it added expectation, the 24-year-old found himself operating under the brightest of spotlights, with any supposed dip in form dissected in minute detail.
Pogba was able to help United to three trophies, but Neville believes there is even more to come from the midfielder on the back of a free summer – which should excite United supporters.
He told Sky Sports: “Pogba came in on the back of a World Cup last season – he didn’t have much rest.
“Obviously, the price tag was a massive burden on him. I think United will be getting a fresher Pogba this season, especially as he’s got one year of the Premier League under his belt.
“He’ll know more about what’s required and we’ll see big things from him. He’s the player I’m most excited about.
“If he takes a game by the scruff of the neck, he can be as good as the best midfielders in the world.”
Gary Neville is also looking forward to seeing a highly-rated United prospect flourish in the new Premier League campaign, with big things expected of Marcus Rashford.
The Red Devils legend is, however, also tipping rivals at Manchester City to catch the eye in what promises to be another keenly-contested title battle.
He added: “The players I like watching are Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford and the City front players like Leroy Sane, Kevin de Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus – I think they’re fantastic. The potential there is incredible.”
United will open their 2017-18 campaign at home to West Ham United on August 13, following their participation in the International Champions Cup and UEFA Super Cup.
They are currently in the United States stepping up their pre-season preparations, with £75 million striker Romelu Lukaku opening his goal account for the club in a 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake on Monday.
