A fast-moving brush fire erupted Sunday afternoon in the Santa Clarita Valley, forcing evacuations and the closure of the 14 freeway.

The Placerita Fire was reported at 12:47 p.m. It grew to 800 acres by 4 p.m. and was at zero percent containment, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The fire destroyed a structure in Disney Ranch and damaged a bridge and another structure, according to our media partner NBC4.

The fire started as a result of a traffic collision at the 14 freeway and Sierra Highway, Lieutenant Chuck Becerra tells KPCC. A spark from the vehicle fire and jumped to nearby brush.

At around 5:20 p.m., the 14 freeway was reopened in both directions. It was previously closed southbound at Golden Valley and northbound at Newhall Avenue.

Mandatory evacuations remain in place for Disney Ranch, Tenderfoot Trail Road, Running Horse Road and Placerita Canyon. An emergency evacuation center has been set up at Golden Valley High School at 27051 Robert C. Lee Parkway in Santa Clarita.

Evacuees can take their livestock to the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds.

Voluntary evacuations are in place for Lost Canyon Road, Via Princessa, Cardinal Drive, Winter Pine Way, Ravenglen Road, Pineview Road, Cambria Estates Lane and Placerita Canyon Road.

More than 200 people from the Los Angeles County Fire Department are working to contain the fire. Firefighters from the Angeles National Forest are also assisting.

Becerra says the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s entire field force — 46 people — is also at the scene.
