Los Angeles County Sheriff’s detectives say bullets meant for a pit bull accidentally struck and killed a teenage boy in Palmdale early Thursday morning.

Two deputies responded to reports of loud music shortly before 4 a.m. at an apartment complex on the 38500 block of Tenth Street East.

A 65-pound male pit bull charged at them when they arrived and bit one of the deputies in the leg. A 17-year-old male teenager came out to restrain the dog and took him to the rear of the complex.

As more units and medical aid were being called to the scene, detectives said the dog ran out again.

Sheriff’s spokesman Christopher Bergner spoke with our media partner NBC4. He said that’s when deputies opened fire, but they did not see the teenager right behind.

“Two deputies engaged the dog in gunfire focused on the dog itself. And those rounds hit the apron of the driveway, traveled 30 to 40 feet back, and potentially hit this individual who was coming around the corner,” Bergner said.

The teen was struck by gunfire and transferred to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not officially been released.

The dog was also struck and taken for treatment by animal control.
