Colorado college football coaches voice off on recruiting changes

COLORADO SPRINGS — Recruiting changes are set to alter the landscape of college football.

The new rules, approved in April by the Division I Council and set to go into effect Aug. 1, allow for an early signing period in December — two months ahead of National Signing Day.

The head coaches of three of Colorado’s major universities — Mike Bobo (Colorado State), Troy Calhoun (Air Force) and Earnest Collins Jr. (Northern Colorado) — voiced their opinions on the early signing period and what it means for their programs moving forward at the college football kick off luncheon Wednesday:

Mike Bobo, Colorado State

“It’s going to make (players and recruits) show their hand: ‘are you really offering this guy or are you really ready to sign?’ That’s both sides; us and The Power 5 (schools). A lot of times, (players) will have offers from this, this, this and this school and in reality, they might not have these offers. So people are going to have to show their hand a little bit.”

Bobo added: “It’s something we’re all going to have to figure out … (The players you sign are) going to be guys that you’re really sure about, guys that are sound academically, that have very good grades because you’re still missing their fall semester grades and their spring semester grades … The guys we sign, we have to be real confident that they’re going to make the grades and qualify (for CSU).”

Troy Calhoun, Air Force

“The real shortcoming ends up being for the young person, just they aren’t able to explore all the opportunities that are out there. I think many make a major change and play their best football during their senior year of high school… an awful lot of that evaluation has now been sacrificed.”

Earnest Collins Jr., Northern Colorado

“I like (the new rules), just simply because those last four weeks of recruiting between December and February, those kids that are believing they’re going to get an FBS offer … if CU or CSU around them, Air Force, have already signed 24 dudes, they only have one (spot) left. Or if they’ve signed all 25 already, they’re not going to get that scholarship, so now it makes it easier for us to go out and let that kid know, ‘Hey, come on over to our place and have some fun.”
