La Roja have looked good so far in the tournament and we are backing them to record a win by at least two goals against the group’s outsiders

Thursday saw Alexis Sanchez make history for Chile, with the Arsenal forward’s opening goal in the 1-1 draw against Germany making him the nation’s leading international goalscorer.

As well as netting his 38th goal for his country, Sanchez was a constant threat for a La Roja side who really took the game to the world champions and on another night they would have come away with a victory.

A combination of the woodwork and fine keeping denied the South American champions a second goal and their intense high-pressing style is likely to cause their next opponents similar problems.

Australia, meanwhile, picked up their opening point of the tournament with a 1-1 draw against Cameroon although progress in the tournament seems unlikely with the Socceroos needing to beat Chile to have any hope.

Certainly, Betfair make the Asian champions rank outsiders – offering Australia at 7/1 (8.00) while Chile can be backed at 9/25 (1.36) and the draw is offered at 4/1 (5.00)

Under Juan Antonio Pizzi, Chile have evolved into a team who are more comfortable in possession and less dependent on explosive counter attacks. They are likely to have plenty of the ball against a clearly inferior Australia side and in truth there seems little reason to oppose the natural favourite.

Chile are priced at 11/10 (2.10) to either win with a -1 handicap or to be winning half time/full time, with either of those selections warranting consideration.

Australia’s only clean sheet in their last 10 matches have come against the United Arab Emirates, while they have conceded at least twice in four of their last seven games inlcuding two goals against the likes of Thailand and Saudi Arabia.

Chile are offered at just 4/9 (1.44) to score over 1.5 goals, but their prowess in the final third coupled with the Australians’ defensive deficiencies should be enough to ensure that La Roja win by two goals or more, leaving the handicap bet as probably the best option.
