GERMAN sensation Alexander Zverev has created a social media storm by wearing a throwback outfit for his US Open first round clash which had fans asking one question: Bjorn Borg, or Will Ferrell?

Zverev — arguably the most exciting young talent on tour — caused a stir when he walked out to play Darian King rocking a striped headband, pinstripe shirt and, notably, knee-high socks.

The striking clothing choice recalled memories of an in-his-prime Borg, the first man in the open era to win 11 grand slam singles titles and lover of a good headband.

Bjorn Borg reacts after defeating John McEnroe to win his fifth consecutive Wimbledon title.

But while Borg is the obvious choice for who Zverev was channelling on Monday (Tuesday AEST), several fans saw things a different way.

The man who sprung to mind for many was the Will Ferrell character Jackie Moon, another headband-wearing athlete from the movie Semi-Pro about a 1970s basketball team.

Most fans seemed to embrace Zverev’s ‘out there’ attire.

But it wasn’t to everyone’s tastes.

Zverev showed off the outfit at an Adidas promotion last week and, it appears, that this will be his attire the No.4 seed will wear for the rest of the tournament.
