Several bookmakers have suspended betting on the out-of favour captain departing the Red Devils and heading back to Goodison Park this summer

After becoming little more than a bit-part player for Manchester United over the past couple of years, it appears the moment has come for Wayne Rooney to call time on his 13 years at Old Trafford.

The 31-year-old may be the club’s leading scorer, having surpassed Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of 249 United goals last season, but he started just 15 games in the Premier League during the 2017-18 campaign, netting five times.

Several bookmakers have now suspended betting on Rooney making a return to boyhood club Everton after sustained support for the move. Paddy Power are currently 1/9 (1.11) that the former England captain is back with the Toffees by the end of the summer transfer window.

Wayne Rooney Manchester United

It’s 6/1 (7.0) that he remains at Old Trafford and 5/1 (6.0) that Rooney chooses a move to China as the next step in his career.

Rooney has been increasingly deployed in a more withdrawn, deep-lying role for United in recent appearances but there is hope a return to Goodison Park will see him restored to a central striking role under Ronald Koeman, especially if Romelu Lukaku is heading away from Merseyside.

However, the bookmakers remain unconvinced about his goalscoring potential at this point, with Rooney a general 66/1 (67.0) shot for the Premier League golden boot.

Paddy Power have already listed potential new United signing Alvaro Morata in their top goalscorer market, with the Real Madrid frontman currently available at 11/2 (6.50) to make immediate impact in front of goal and challenge holder and current 11/4 (3.75) favourite, Harry Kane.

Jose Mourinho’s men are 10/3 (4.33) to win the Premier League next season, second only to their city rivals who lead the market at 15/8 (2.88) with Paddy Power after already confirming the arrivals of Ederson and Bernardo Silva.
