What a day it was on Sunday at Camp Nou. In FC Barcelona’s final home game of the season, the fans were treated to an afternoon of total football in the form of a 5–0 rout over cross-city rivals RCD Espanyol that brings the league leaders to the brink of another La Liga championship. Here’s a look at the most interesting facts and figures from the big win:
Luis Suarez‘s brace versus Espanyol — a team he had previously never scored against — gives him 37 goals on the season and brings him to within one game of the European Golden Shoe. Suárez leads both Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain by four goals.
Since losing at home to Valencia on 17 April, Barça have won four straight while outscoring their opponents 21–0.
The blaugrana trident — aka Messi, Suárez and Neymar — scored four of the team’s five goals on Sunday, giving the trio a record 127 this season, five more than last year’s record-setting 122.
Lionel Messi scored his 7th free-kick goal this season when he deposited a 22-metre free kick in the 8th minute on Sunday. It is Messi’s career-high for free-kick goals in a season and it gives him 23 in total, the same number as Barça great Ronald Koeman had when he played.
Messi’s goal against Espanyol ties him with Telmo Zarra as the top all-time scorer in Spanish League derbies with 14. Zarra did it in derbies between Athletic Club and Real Sociedad.
Messi opened the scoring for the 11th time this year, and now has a total of 26 league goals while leading the league in assists with 18! This despite having missed two months in the fall to injury.
Playing in his 50th game with Barça, Rafinha scored for the second time this year. His first goal came in the UEFA Super Cup against Sevilla last August.
Luis Enrique turned 46 on Sunday. There’s no better way to celebrate other than an intense victory.
Barça’s victory against Espanyol on Sunday was their 8th straight home derby win. Over that span, Barça have outscored Espanyol 26–1.
Goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen returned to the starting lineup in league play after Claudio Bravo was injured in last weekend’s match and did not concede. Ter Stegen’s last league appearance was against Las Palmas at Camp Nou day on Match Day 6.
Barça and Real Madrid will play separate games for the league title on Saturday as Atlético Madrid dropped out of the running after falling at Levante.
