'Avengers: Infinity War' first look explodes as superheroes assemble at D23 Expo – USA TODAY

ANAHEIM, Calif. — A superhero army hit the stage at D23 Expo on Saturday for Avengers: Infinity War.

Thor (Chris Hemsworth), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) among other super-luminaries took the fan convention stage along with arch-villain Thanos (Josh Brolin). for Avengers: Infinity War.

But even with its overflowing bounty of superpower, flown in specially from the Avengers set, where filming is still in progress, Marvel’s biggest weapon was its explosive first-look footage for the superhero epic hitting screens May 4, 2018.

The footage unveiling was the stunning culmination of the Disney live-action presentation, which left the crowing standing on its feet giving applause that rivaled Thor with its thunder.

“Almost every single superhero, we have ever introduced, is going to be in the film,” Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, said from the stage. “This is by far the biggest production in the history of Marvel Studios.”

Feige brought out the cast, starting with the Brolin, who continued Thanos villainous trash-talking as the rest of the heroes took the stage.

With the final introduction of Iron Man, Downey Jr., the scale was so impressive that there had to be a class picture.

Even Downey Jr., who kicked the superhero movie phenom into warp drive with 2008’s Iron Man, had to take stock of the sight.

“Funny enough Kevin (Feige) and I figured all of this out 10 years ago at Randy’s Doughnuts,” Downey Jr. joked.

Downey Jr. then introduced Joe Russo, one-half of Infinity War‘s directing team to unleash the footage. (Brother Anthony remained on the set to work).

The footage starts to explain the unusual coming together of the various Marvel superhero worlds — it begins aboard The Milano, the spaceship utilized by Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) and his crew in Guardians of the Galaxy.

As they approach a tough planet (“Let’s put our mean faces on,” Star-Lord says) is interrupted by a body flying into the spaceship window.

As it’s pulled into the spaceship, it turns out to be Hemsworth’s Thor who looks confused at the strange crew — including Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) , Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) — and says, “Who the hell are you guys?”

Something is very wrong in the universe to bring all these forces together, as signified by an Earth-bound school bus with Peter Parker (Tom Holland). The hairs on his arm stand on end as he turns to see a spaceship coming in.

All heck breaks lose as the fighting begins and Thanos makes his uber-villain presence known. Initial victims include a new suited Spider-Man who appears to be gravely injured in another scene. He tells Iron Man Tony Stark, “I’m sorry Tony.”
